Kai is different from other girls her age: She is an intersex hybrid who identifies as female. She has been homeschooled her entire life due to her anxious mother, who fears that something may happen to Kai if she were discovered by the council. Hybrids have been illegal in the eyes of the council for centuries, as their powers and abilities are naturally much stronger than those of a typical mystic.
